General description of the collection: This collection consists of the papers of Donald O. Clark. The collection contains personal correspondence between Clark and Lawrence H. Caruthers, Jr. from 11 March to 20 October 1969, and official documents regarding United Nations military commitments in the Congo from 1961 and 1963. Documents related to the 10 August 1969 Change of Command Ceremony for the 1st Infantry Division are included in the collection, as are news clippings of Clark's service in Vietnam. Three autographed photographs are included in the collection: photographs of Edwin J. Carns, Ralph H. Osborne, annd R.H. Harrison.

The 1st Division ("Fighting First" or "The Big Red One") was activated on May 24, 1917, assembled at the New York Port of Embarkation in June, and completed its arrival in France on December 22, 1917.
